Spring Summer 2019

For Spring and Summer 2019 Colenimo presents a collection inspired by the work of American abstract expressionist painter Helen Frankenthaler. Frankenthaler’s work is notable in its emphasis on spontaneity and is identified with the use of fluid shapes, abstract masses, and lyrical gestures.

She made use of large formats on which she painted, simplified abstract compositions in flat hues of similar in tone or intensity. Frankenthaler employed a technique that she named “soak stain” involving the application of heavily diluted oil paints onto unprimed canvas, allowing the colour to soak directly in. She was a major contributor to the history of postwar American painting and as an active painter for nearly six decades, she went through a variety of phases and stylistic shifts.
